Looking Forward to the Future

Vuitton got her nickname “Button” when a voicemail transcribed her name as Button instead of Vuitton when we received a call to say that she had multiple cysts on her lungs and was likely terminal. We were at the National Specialty at Purina Farms, helping to run the event while our baby puppy was potentially dying.

Not that she knew it. While leaking air into her chest cavity, she earned her TKN. She’d just offer behaviors in exam room when we’d go visit in the evenings in the cutest little sweater the vet staff gave her.

We drove through the night to SC after a week of hospitalization to a vet willing to perform surgery to remove most the cysts to, hopefully, ensure she was only immunocompromised, not leaking air anymore. This included stopping on the side of the road and pulling air out of her TWO chest tubes while stuck in traffic and hoping against all odds that it was the right thing to do to travel across the country to a different vet.

When we stopped, she was running around like nothing was wrong.

It wasn’t until we went to her two week check up post-surgery that the surgeon disclosed it was the worst case she had ever seen. She survived with exactly 1.5 lungs – it was against quality of life to take more and, against all odds, that was exactly what was needed to ensure all were removed.

Her prognosis was a full recovery.

We bubble wrapped her. For months, she barely left property. We didn’t go to shows, we didn’t socialize, we just rejoiced that she was alive and constantly monitored her breeding.

Then it was time to let her out of the bubble. She learned to be a show dog with Jin, and did so with style. She traveled through her teenager phase with the main character energy only Button could bring. She built her fan club and proved to us that it was a-okay to let her out of the bubble.

Then we stepped into an arena with stock. She immediately showed true partnership and workmanship. She works the flock together with her handler, even when she’s still trying to figure out the goals.

She has a hell of a future ahead of her. It may include herding ribbons. It may include puppies. It may include a myriad of things, but it’s definitely going to include Button making sure everyone knows she’s the main character.

Pedigree

Vuitton comes from a fantastic combination of working, show, and farm dogs (usually all mixed together). Nikan, her sire, has been a favorite for a while – showcasing true versatility in the show, bitesports, and other sporting venues while being the best pet on his family’s couch. Ilvie, her dam, is always a joy in the home – keeping the pack in order.

With Tyros, Harwey, Bataille, and Hellen, we felt her pedigree was packed with interest and potential. We are looking forward to determining how best to utilize her diversity and also line breeding opportunities.
