Collaborating across breeders and owners to better the Beauceron breed

I was the child obsessed with animals, though as a child reptiles and amphibians had my heart more than anything. I wanted to learn about them, about their behavior, about their instincts, and every crumb of information I could find. Steve Irwin was my hero, his compassion and passion for all creatures was something I connected with. As I’ve grown, that focus has turned to dogs, and grown into an immense passion for the breeds I love dearly, the Beauceron and Siberian Husky.

I have been a trainer of pet dogs for many years, working on house manners, cute tricks, good behavior in public and so forth. I have worked, handled, and trained hunting dogs, service dogs, therapy dogs, and many many pet dogs in my years as a trainer and as a late in life Service dog handler. My husband Chris has also been a trainer for years now, with a strong focus on Service dogs in particular, so we are a very dog oriented household.

It wasn’t until a few years before I set out to purchase my first Beauceron Oath that I really had higher goals as far as showing, titling, and proving my dogs in a competition setting. Now my household includes my four Beaucerons Gardy, Tamaki, Séance, Reverie, and Niffin. As well as our Siberian Huskies, Zora and Sparrow.

I consider my roles at Des Vents as a researcher, nutrition nerd, and the down and dirty chore person. I will be the face most often seen in the whelping box, caring for our litters at all hours when they are smallest, and the one responsible for their introductions to the world. As an individual with a physical disability and chronic pain, I cannot always dedicate myself to the most physically demanding sports, and sometimes can’t even show all my dogs on a long weekend. Instead my focus is on what I can assist with, the pen and paper, the ongoing education, technology, and record keeping. Not to say I won’t be out all the time with our dogs, because I love showing and adore sporting with them as well.

I have a particularly high passion for working with my dogs as a partner, activities like mushing or bikejoring, herding, and trailing game where we are a team first and my trust has to be in my dog are at the top of my list. As such, you will often see that many of my dogs participate in these activities, even if we are not competing on a national level or in races. To keep the crew busy, we also dabble in many other activities such as obedience, rally, kayaking, hiking, lure coursing, and dock diving.

We currently live in West-Central Ohio, and if anyone would like to connect to meet anywhere in the region I am always happy to do so. Traveling an hour or two, or further for an event meetup is not out of the question! The crew and I love to do meet and greets for the breed and I will talk your ear off for hours if you let me. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you would like to chat or meet in person.

Breeding Goals

My goal as a breeder is to produce a versatile dog – one capable of the jobs the breed was meant for and beyond. My ideal dog is a jack-of-all-trades, even if that means sacrificing being a master of a specific lofty goal. Dogs in my home will often be our most versatile, steadiest of partners. Both within the home as beloved pets, and as dabble dogs for any sports that catch our eye. When breeding, I will aim to choose careful pairings to maintain temperaments and structure while elevating drive as desired for that pairing.

Looking Forward to the Future

Where to begin on our excitement for this little lady…

Séance traveled all the way from Germany to join Erika in Ohio as of April, 2021.

I am forever thankful to Constantin and Yvonne for entrusting me with this lovely puppy. She is everything I could have wanted, and a fantastic first prospect for our kennel dreams. While I can take no credit for the careful planning of her breeders, her pedigree is full of potential and dogs I adore. Constantin and Yvonne gave her the best start in life I could ask for, and so many updates as the little ones grew! I hope to make them proud with our accomplishments as a team, and show them my love for her here in my home.

Our Goals

For the moment, Séance is just a growing pup and we’re doing a lot of foundation work for our goals. If she is anything like her parents the world will be ours for the taking. We’ve seen it proven time and again how her parents have such a joy to work, confidence of character, and the drive to give anything a go. Her Sire Homme is a Search and Rescue dog with an accomplished show career, her Dam Lilo is a proven herding dog who has shown similar aptitudes for search work, with a strong showing career behind her as well.

We hope to shape that drive in many ways, with Herding, Obedience/Rally, and Scent work at the forefront. Dock diving, bikejoring, and more will also be thrown in there if she shows she enjoys them.

A sweet and thoughtful puppy full of potential, but above all she is joining us as a member of the family. We hope she will not be quite the devil of a puppy her mother was! Though we did ask for one who was ready to take on the world.

As we’ve gotten to know her, she has shown to be a sweet, social, and kind puppy. She is bold and open to all, has never met a stranger, and always has energy for more games and more learning on any given day. While not vocally demanding, she is persistent in her wants, and gives clear signals with intention for everything she wants to see, do, or have. She is incredibly observant and calculating, and will sit and watch something for a moment and dive into it with full confidence. I am so thrilled to watch her learn and offer new behaviors, and love watching her mind work through a problem.

Seance’s Three Year Update

Time flies when you’re having fun right?
It’s hard to believe I’ve had nearly three years with my little beauceron with a big attitude.

To sum up her personality now she is a serious girl with a feral child side in there too. You know you have been accepted as one of her close friends when your greets switch from a bump and enthusiasm to a full contact sport tackle. She is just as likely to clown it up and do her best to make her people laugh as she is to focus on her livestock despite anything going on around her and think through problems.

She has grown into the well rounded dog I hoped she would, moving seamlessly from home, to the city, to the farm. She loves to show off and make sure Robyn and I to crack a smile in the Obedience and Rally ring, hang out at the cafe, or remind me just how much of a powerhouse she is when we bikejor.

Her show career in AKC has had it’s ups and downs as she isn’t the biggest fan of the show ring and would much rather be up to something fun. She has placed Best of Breed though for her first major and points in AKC from the classes, and every once in a while remembers how much I love it and gives me her all.

Our goals for 2024 are a mixed bag of sports, Obedience/Rally, and our first herding trials.

For now I leave you with the same message as when she was a puppy…
We have so much learning, bonding, and exploring to do.
So many adventures to take, and so many places to see.
We hope you will follow us on the journey!
Enjoy a snippet of watching her grow in pictures, just as I did.
