Looking Forward to the Future

While looking at potential puppies to add to our program, there were several dogs that continually caught our eyes while looking for a blended show and sport line. We were hunting beautiful movement, handler engagement, and drive. As always, we’re aiming for those truly versatile puppies who could take on the world. When a breeding was announced that combined many of those dogs including Shah (Multi CH Momento Mistika Pinkerton Argente BH IGP-3, Seven’s sire), we immediately began to research travel.

After much difficulty and many tears, our perfect puppies arrived!

While Sully landed in Texas, Shazi journeyed to join the Ohio family. However, she continued to charm everyone she met. Through a series of wonderful events, she’s landed back with the Salley family – recently relocated to Georgia. She spends time in Ohio with the Stephens family and Texas with the Crivello family.

Our Goals

Shazi has been a bit of a late bloomer, spending most of her puppyhood learning about the world around her. As she’s grown, her drive has blossomed. She’ll chase a toy for hours, adores the flirt pole, and happily jumps into the water for a bumper. Anything that involves moving and her people, and she’s up for the adventure!

We are looking forward to channeling that energy into dog sports, focusing on obedience and rally, though her love for water will be explored through dock diving. With her handler engagement and love for patterns, we expect to see her thrive in the upcoming year. Unfortunately, due to a bone spur on her shoulder, we do not expect her to spend much time in the conformation ring, despite her beautiful movement.

Conformation Evaluation

The first thing that anyone mentions when seeing Shazi at her best is her movement. She truly is a dog who floats with a balanced topline from nose to tail without an ounce of effort in each and every step, and her trotting speed and efficiency can put some of our other dogs to shame when she really lets go.

Her front assembly is something we hope to see passed onto her offspring, with lovely layback and balanced length of upper arm. She’s had an impressive forechest and width of chest that made us jump up and down since she was a baby puppy, none of us could believe our eyes when seeing her puppy stacks from her breeder.

She has a coat that lays quite flat to the body, but is thick, lush, and oh so satisfying to sink your hands into. The texture is appropriately water and weather proof, and complimentary to the breed purpose as a tending dog.

She has matured into a dog with balanced substance to compliment her athleticism, though we had a heck of a baby deer stage for multiple years. She is a prime example of a “Let them grow” dog, and while her slow maturity has been a test of patience, it has all paid off in the end.

The faults we see in Shazi are the same we have expected since she was a young dog. Her expression, and in particular her rounded eyes, are her biggest weakness for a beauceron. She has quite the baby face and teddy bear-like expression, as well as a more narrow head for the substance she has matured into.

She is also a long dog when evaluated to the standard proportionally, with a high tuck up that we hope to see improve after her litter, as some girls do, so that we have a better idea of what to expect of her offspring.

Temperament Evaluation

Shazi is a massive goofball. She brings joy into every interaction with her people – turning circles and demanding attention. She’s a dog that’s always on the go and you better keep up! When she wants something, she’ll sit in front of you with the biggest begging eyes you’ve ever seen! When she doesn’t want to do something, you get the exact same look… She’s more pressure avoidant than we would like in a beauceron, but believe that to be primarily experience-based.

Her drive to please is endless. When working Shazi, the trick is to break things into bite size chunks because, as soon as she can understand them, you can chain behaviors together quickly. She will perform the same trick a dozen times in a row if it will make you happy, but does struggle with focus to build longer trick routines without fully learning the individual pieces.

Where she really shines it out on stock. Life in the Salley family has been constantly on the go the past couple of years, or should would have been out herding C course regularly. With as much as she loves running and spinning in circles – running circles around stock is her absolute favorite combination of activities. She has been shown to be gentle and mindful of stock large and small when exposed, but opportunities to get her out in the world have been limited. The pressure avoidance we may see in other venues is never present if there’s a sheep nearby, and we love to see signs that the instinct and love of working her stock is still there.

Meet Jin

Virginia Burrell
Located in Southeast New Hampshire

I was born into a family of professional dog handlers and trainers, so growing up I spent most of my time traveling from show to show and hanging out with the dogs. I started showing dogs myself when I was 5 years old, and never looked back. While I love many dog sports, conformation shows will always be one of my favorite things to do with my dogs.

Around 2015, I began researching Beaucerons with the idea that I might want to have a higher drive dog to pursue other sports with. In 2018, that idea became reality when I brought home Omen- who would become the very best service dog, show dog, sport dog, and all around goofball companion I could have asked for. Omen also led me to some new friends through the breed community, and, eventually, those friends and I decided to build a program together.

Today, you’ll often find me at shows with a Beauceron or five! While I only have two Beaucerons of my own, Omen and Zira, I frequently have a “loaner” or three- usually teenagers or young adults who need some practice in the ring for a few months at a time. Keeping my full time Beauceron numbers lower makes traveling to shows easier, and lets me put more time into training the dogs who come through temporarily. It also makes it more feasible to split time with my other breeding project- Little Star Chinooks!

Breeding Goals

Regardless of breed, my goal is to produce sound, functional, driven dogs who can succeed in the field, show ring, and home. I strive to uphold the standard and history of the breed, while still producing healthy, diverse dogs.

  • Heart: Normal – 26 months

Summary

Sukuna is from the same pairing as Reaver and Terror, sired by Natchez. When we all discovered we had relatives, we began to share our experiences which turned into this beautiful collaboration. She is the mother of our A Litter with Soleil et Lune. We were delighted to have her contribute to the breed and love to hear her stories moving forward as a working service dog and beloved sport partner for Rebekah.

Conformation

Sukuna is a well balanced dog with an athletic build to match her tireless energy. Her finely chiseled head and string topline help to make her both striking to look at, and a sound mover. We’d like for her upper arm to be longer, and for her to have a bit more angulation overall. And while her frame is balanced, more bone and substance would also be ideal.

Temperament

Sukuna is often described as pushy and head strong, but is also the sweetest cuddly dog with her people and most strangers alike. She enjoys engaging with her people and enjoys knowing exactly what you want her to do next. She is biddable and if you know her, wouldn’t be seen without a toy in her mouth, forcing you to play fetch.

She is quite pushy with other dogs, but enjoys the company of submissive females or most male dogs. She has integrated into many packs with adult dogs she was unfamiliar with, but she does create space for herself as needed.

She is truly a confident headstrong dog and takes new environments and situations in stride, and with her temperament has excelled as a working service dog for her person.

Breeding Requirements

Health Testing

All des Vents puppy parents will have received their CHIC certifications and have current results on all relevant testing. This means they will have their heart, hips, elbows, and eyes evaluated as recommended by the American Beauceron Club.

Temperament Testing

It is important to evaluate dogs to ensure they are sound and stable. This can be done in multiple venues, but the preferred method of testing for the des Vents family is a French-style temperament test, usually only available once a year through the American Beauceron Club. If access to that testing is not available, testing through the American Temperament Test Society or other venues is acceptable.

Structural Evaluation

A Beauceron is a beautiful dog with a specific breed standard to adhere to. No dog is perfect, but it is important to understand how each dog fits the standard and ensure each dog is structurally sound. To test structure, the preferred venue is a French-style evaluation, same as the temperament test. In addition, we prefer compete in conformation through AKC to earn Championships.

Performance Evaluation

Beaucerons are active, intelligent, powerful dogs. Just like we want to ensure our Beaucerons look like Beaucerons, we also want to ensure they fit the standard in terms of trainability and personality. We require our pairings to have parents who have proven themselves in performances venues through successful training and titling. With the varied goals of the collaboration, we have many venues our dogs compete in. We use this requirement to ensure that they have proven they can not only train at home, but also apply that training in a competitive environment

The Beauceron should be discerning and confident. He is a dog with spirit and initiative, wise and fearless with no trace of timidity. Intelligent, easily trained, faithful, gentle and obedient. The Beauceron possesses an excellent memory and an ardent desire to please his master.

Background

As a group, we fell in love with Reaver and, when his sire became available, we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to add him to our lives and program. Natchez joined the Beaucerons des Vents pack in September of 2022, making the long trip from Serbia to Louisiana to live with the Menards (Ashleigh, Zach, and their 13 year old daughter, Rylee). He settled in immediately, charming everyone that he met including a senior dog in her household who doesn’t warm up to many. In a wonderful twist of events, he weaseled his way into Rylee’s heart to become her first juniors dog!
